AAP again takes over MCD, Mahesh Khinchi wins mayor election by 3 votes

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has once again won the mayor post in MCD. AAP candidate Mahesh Khinchi has become the mayor by winning the election. He defeated BJP candidate Kishan Lal by 3 votes.

While the election for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation was held on Thursday. A total of 265 votes were cast for the post of mayor, out of which 2 votes were declared invalid while out of 263 votes, AAP candidate Mahesh Khinchi got 133 votes and BJP candidate Kishan Lal got 130 votes

Mahesh Khinchi new Mayor of MCD

While after Shaili Oberoi, now councilor Mahesh Khinchi from Devnagar, Karol Bagh will take over the post of MCD mayor. Till now the current mayor Shaili Oberoi was on extension. At the time of the mayoral election in April 2024, BJP and AAP had declared the candidates, but the file to decide the presiding officer was returned saying that there was no recommendation of the CM on the file.

The current mayor was asked to remain in office till the new mayor was elected. The then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was in jail at that time, so he could not make the recommendation. Since April 2024 mayor election was pending.

Mayor election is held in April

Although the election of the Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation is held every year in April. When the general elections of the corporation were held in December 2022, AAP won 134 seats. After this, AAP councilor Dr. Shaili Oberoi became the mayor in February 2023. When the financial year ended, Shaili Oberoi was again elected mayor in the mayoral elections held in April 2023.

In the meanwhile, the mayoral election of April 2024 could not be held. According to the MCD Act, the first year on the post of mayor is reserved for women councilors, the second for general and the third year for Scheduled Caste councilors. The last 2 years are again of the general category.

7 Congress councilors boycotted voting

During the election, 7 Congress councilors boycotted voting. The final process of voting for the councilors is going on, before this BJP MP Manoj Tiwari arrived and voted. However, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal was also absent during this time.
