Assam Final Voter List: 2.4 Lakh More Names Deleted, EC Says
The Election Commission said 2.4 lakh additional names were deleted from Assam’s final voter list after claims and objections were reviewed.
The Election Commission on Tuesday said an additional 2.4 lakh names were removed from the final electoral roll in Assam compared to the draft list issued during the special revision process.
The poll panel has been conducting a special revision of the voter list in the state, similar to routine updates of electoral rolls. Assam is not among the 12 states and Union Territories where the Election Commission is carrying out a special intensive revision.
The state is expected to go to the Assembly polls in April or May.
In the draft voter list released on December 27, more than 10 lakh names were deleted following a house-to-house verification exercise. Of these, 4.7 lakh names were removed due to deaths, while over 5.2 lakh voters were found to have shifted from their registered addresses.
The draft roll had listed 2.52 crore voters in Assam.
After the publication of the draft list, voters whose names were deleted were allowed to submit claims and objections until January 22.
The final electoral roll released on Tuesday showed that the total number of voters in Assam stood at 2.49 crore. This reflects a decline of 0.97 percent compared to the draft roll.
