CJI DY Chandrachud got emotional at his farewell, said sorry if hurtled anyone
Farewell ceremony was organized in the Supreme Court on Friday on the last working day of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. During this visit, the CJI shared many important things related to his family, parents, personal life as well as career and also shared his experiences.
DY Chandrachud said, 'As judges, we give decisions on complex subjects, but the most important thing for us is what impact our decisions have on the lives of common citizens.'
While Chief Justice DY Chandrachud thanked everyone for the honor he received during the farewell ceremony. The Chief Justice shared emotional things about his father and his judicial experiences at his farewell ceremony. DY Chandrachud told that his father was disciplined but he never imposed discipline on us.
Emotional address of CJI
On this last day of his tenure, Chief Justice gave an emotional address with gratitude and humility for his judicial journey. Surrounded by his colleagues and the legal community, Chandrachud shared his personal experiences and accolades. He also apologized to those who may have been inadvertently hurt by his woods.
"Yesterday evening, when my registrar judicial asked me when to schedule the ceremony, I was told it could be at 2 pm so that many cases could be disposed of. I thought, will there be anyone in this court at 2 pm on Friday," he said with a smile.
Justice Chandrachud expressed his admiration for the traditions of the Indian judiciary, saying that as a young lawyer he saw the art of arguments and learnt important tricks of working in the court.This court has been adorned by great judges and they have left their legacy here," he said.
CJI praised his successor
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud also said about his successor Justice Sanjiv Khanna, "There will be no difference in this court even after I am gone because a person as steady and dignified as Justice Khanna will take over this position."
Discussing the source of inspiration during his tenure, he said, "When you ask me what inspires me, this is it. It is a journey as a judge. I thank all of you, you all have taught me a lot about law and life. Even today while disposing of 45 cases, I have learnt a lot about life."
On his last working day, senior advocates and members of the judiciary paid tribute to him for his profound impact on the judicial field of India. He was accompanied by Justices Sanjiv Khanna; Chandrachud was praised for his legal knowledge as well as his human approach towards justice.

Meanwhile CJI thanked everyone for the honor he received during the farewell ceremony. The Chief Justice shared emotional things about his father and his judicial experiences in his farewell ceremony. The CJI told, "My father had bought a small flat in Pune. I asked him why, then he said that he knew that he would not live in it. He told me to keep this flat till you retire as a judge so that you know that if your morality is affected, you will have a place to hide.
Decisions have an impact on common citizens: CJI
Talking about the motivation behind his judicial work, the CJI said, "As judges, we deliver decisions on complex issues, but the most important thing for us is the impact of our decisions on the lives of common citizens. Recently, we allowed two blind candidates to appear for the interview in the Rajasthan Judicial Examination.
Later, we were informed that they cleared the exam and were included in the selected list. This is what motivates us." He also gave some other examples, "Some time ago, a doctor who scored very well in NEET despite suffering from a disease like muscular dystrophy was denied admission to MBBS. We got him medically examined and then directed to get him admission.
Similarly, the son of a daily wage labourer could not get admission in IIT because he could not pay the fees on time, as he was not able to use a credit card. We intervened and got him admission.
" Chief Justice Chandrachud said, "My time spent in Allahabad changed my judicial outlook”.
Remembered his days of Allahabad
While CJI recalling his early days, he said that when he became the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, he was garlanded with 15-25 marigold flowers in every ceremony. He said, "My wife used to wear garlands of 15-25 marigold flowers. Nee used to say that marigold flowers stain the shirt, so I told her not to take so much trouble, the flowers are not needed. But I later realized that these flowers were for her, so that pictures can be taken.
CJI remembered his mother
CJI Chandrachud also shared a shloka in memory of his mother, “Aushadham Jahnavi Toyam Vaidyo Narayano Harih,” which means that medicine is as pure as the Ganges and the doctor is equal to Lord Narayana. He said, “In childhood, I did not know the meaning of this shloka, I only knew that after this, bitter medicine was available.” He said, “Aushad (medicine) should be considered as pure as the Ganges water, and the doctor (vaidya) should be considered equal to Lord Narayana.”
Kapil Sibal on CJI
During this, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Kapil Sibal also gave a farewell speech and during this time also mentioned many major decisions. Sibal said, Truth is also relative. We should evaluate a judge in the context of the time in which he is living.
While writing about Justice Chandrachud, we will discuss his decisions, his simplicity, patience and calm nature. All these qualities make him one of the greatest judges of this country." Sibal further said, "Thank you for always listening to us, even if we do not agree, but your spirit of listening is saluted. You are a trailblazer, whether it is protecting disabled rights, strengthening the dignity of the individual, or your efforts towards breaking caste issues and gender stereotypes.
Attorney General also shared moments
Although, Attorney General also said, 'People holding important positions in the judiciary are also human beings and have to discharge big responsibilities. He praised the human aspect of CJI Chandrachud and said that he allowed women employees to work from home and provided crèche facilities in the court
Newly appointed CJI Sanjeev Khanna on DY Chandrachud
During this, the newly appointed CJI Sanjeev Khanna said, "When a huge tree of justice retreats, the winds blow differently, other trees try to fill that void, but the forest never remains the same." He said, “Chandrachud sahab is a scholar, as well as a deep jurist. I admire his patience and work ethic. Under his leadership, new buildings were constructed in the court and a special war room was established.
In a poignant moment Chandrachud apologized to all, "If ever anyone was hurt by anything I said, I am sorry, it was never my intention. Please forgive me."
