Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth on February 19 said the party will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in alliance with the DMK.

She made the announcement after meeting Chief Minister M. K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai. DMDK Treasurer L.K. Sutheesh also attended the meeting.

Member of Parliament Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin were present.

Earlier, Stalin confirmed the alliance on X. He wrote, "It is a great joy that the National Progressive Dravida Kazhagam, formed by 'Captain' Vijayakanth, has joined the Secular Progressive Alliance today."

The DMDK was part of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance in the last parliamentary election. The party had not announced its alliance decision for the 2026 Assembly polls until now.

Speaking to reporters, Premalatha Vijayakanth said, "For the first time, DMDK will form an alliance with DMK and contest the 2026 assembly elections. We met the Chief Minister today and confirmed the alliance. Through this, we have answered the questions raised about the alliance. This alliance will win more than 200 seats."

She added, "This alliance should have been formed in 2016. Karunanidhi had said then that the fruit would slip and fall into the milk, and that has now happened."

Premalatha Vijayakanth further said, "A committee will be formed to decide how many seats and in which constituencies DMDK will contest in this alliance, and after consulting with both parties, Chief Minister Stalin will announce the decision."
