Know Justice Sanjiv Khanna, will be the next CJI, Central government has approved it
Though Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed the next Chief Justice of India. He will take oath as CJI on November 11. This information has been given by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. He will replace CJI DY Chandrachud. However, CJI DY Chandrachud had recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor. And the government has approved his recommendation.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be the new CJI
Although DY Chandrachud is retiring from the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on November 10. On the basis of seniority, Justice Khanna will take over the post of CJI in his place. Justice Sanjiv Khanna is expected to hold the post till his retirement on May 13, 2025.

Recommendation of CJI Chandrachud
While DY Chandrachud took over as Chief Justice on November 9, 2022. According to tradition, the Ministry of Law writes a letter to the CJI about a month before his retirement, asking for the name of his successor. After this, the current CJI sends his reply to the ministry, sending the recommendation.
After the recommendation of the current CJI, the seal has been put by the government. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has issued a notification appointing Justice Khanna as the next CJI from November 11.
Know new CJI of India
Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been registered with the Delhi Bar Council in 1983. It was from here that he started his legal journey. Initially, Justice Khanna used to practice in the district courts located at Tis Hazari before going to the Delhi High Court.
Even though he practiced in different areas including constitutional law, arbitration, commercial law, company law and criminal law. He worked as a senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department.
Later took over the responsibility as a standing counsel (civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. His expertise was also special in criminal law. He argued many cases as an Additional Public Prosecutor in the Delhi High Court. Often served as amicus curiae to assist the Delhi High Court in important cases.
Held important responsibilities in the Delhi High Court
Justice Khanna was promoted as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005. He became a permanent judge in 2006. he also Justice Khanna's career continued to grow rapidly.
He did not serve as Chief Justice in any High Court before his appointment as a judge in the Supreme Court in January 2019.
Given verdict on EVM-VVPAT case
Justice Khanna also headed the bench that rejected the request for 100% VVPAT verification of votes cast in electronic voting machines (EVMs). The April 2024 verdict acknowledged the measures taken by the Election Commission of India to ensure the accuracy and integrity of elections.

Article 370 verdict
Justice Khanna was also part of the five-judge bench that upheld the decision to abrogate Article 370. Stipulating that this Article, though a unique aspect of India's federal structure, does not confer sovereignty on Jammu and Kashmir.
With a rich background in various fields of law and dedication to judicial service, Justice Khanna will retire on May 13, 2025.
