Next Chief Justice Of India: The CJI DY Chandrachud has recommended the name of his successor, following the tradition. Meanwhile CJI has recommended the name of the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as the next Chief Justice.
CJI DY Chandrachud has proposed his name
The Chief Justice of India Chandrachud has proposed the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as his successor. CJI has sent the proposal of Justice Khanna's name to the central government. CJI Chandrachud is retiring on November 10, 2024.
However if the government approves the recommendation of the CJI, then Justice Sanjiv Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. Justice Khanna's tenure as CJI will last till May 13, 2025.
Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?
Though Justice Sanjiv Khanna have started his law career as an advocate. And after that Sanjiv Khanna joined the Bar Councial of Delhi in 1983. Meanwhile He started practising in the district courts of Tis Hazari.
According to Justice Khanna's profile available on the official website of the Supreme Court, he fought cases in several areas such as constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna can become the next CJI
In the while Justice Khanna's worked for a long time, as Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department. In 2004, he was appointed as Standing Counsel for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He also appeared and argued several criminal cases in the Delhi High Court as Additional Public Prosecutor and Amicus Curiae.
In 2005, he was promoted as Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court. In 2006, he was made a Permanent Judge. As a judge of the Delhi HC, he held the positions of Chairman/Judge-in-Charge of the Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre and District Court Mediation Centers.
Justice Khanna was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 18 January 2019. He also held the post of Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee from 17 June 2023 to 25 December 2023.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna is currently the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority and a member of the Governing Counsel of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.

DY Chandrachud took over as the Chief Justice of India on 9 November 2022. His term as CJI will end on 10 November. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.
