Major accident in Goa on Christmas: Tourists boat capsized, 1 dead, 20 rescued

A major accident happened in North Goa on Wednesday on the Christmas Eve. One person died and 20 others were rescued after a tourist boat capsized in the Arabian Sea near Calangute beach.

One dead, 20 people rescued

A senior police officer said, "A 54-year-old man died, and 20 others were rescued after the boat they were traveling in capsized, and they were taken to a nearby hospital. He said that except for two passengers, all other passengers were wearing life jackets. He said that the passengers also included children up to six years of age and women.

Lifesaving agency Drishti Marine rushed to help

A spokesperson of the government-appointed lifesaving agency Drishti Marine said that the boat capsized about 60 meters from the beach, resulting in all the passengers falling into the sea water. He said a family from Khed in Maharashtra was also on board the boat.

He said an employee of Drishti Marine rushed to the rescue and called for help when he saw the boat capsize. Meantime 18 lifeguards rushed to the aid of the struggling passengers and brought them safely to the shore," he said.

First aid given to injured passengers

The spokesperson said the injured passengers were given first aid while those in critical condition were rushed to a medical facility in an ambulance. " He said. He said two passengers on board the boat was not wearing life jackets.

15 killed in Mumbai boat accident

Goa is a popular tourist destination, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations. The incident took place a week ago when a Navy speed boat undergoing engine testing lost control and collided with a passenger ferry 'Neel Kamal' off the Mumbai coast, killing 15 people.

The ferry, carrying over 100 passengers, was heading from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist attraction known for its cave temples.
