Mobilization against Jagdeep Dhankhar opposition brings no-confidence motion demanding, removal from Vice President post

Amid the ongoing deadlock in Parliament, the opposition has now mobilized against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The opposition India Block has brought a no-confidence motion to remove Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post. The opposition alliance has submitted a proposal to this effect to the Secretary General of Rajya Sabha.

The no-confidence motion against Jagdeep Dhankhar has the signatures of 60 members.

Mobilization against Jagdeep Dhankhar

According to the information, the opposition parties have presented a proposal in the Rajya Sabha demanding the removal of the Vice President from the post under Article 67-B of the Constitution. Meanwhile this proposal has been brought demanding ,removal of the Vice President of the Rajya Sabha. This proposal has not been signed by Sonia Gandhi and the floor leaders of any party.

No-confidence motion against Jagdeep Dhankhar

On behalf of Congress, Jairam Ramesh and Pramod Tiwari along with Nadeem Ul Haq and Sagarika Ghosh of Trinamool Congress submitted this proposal to the Secretary General of Rajya Sabha. Opposition parties have alleged in the no-confidence motion that they are not allowed to speak.

The chairman is being biased. Citing the example of the previous day, the opposition parties have said that the members of the Treasury Bench were given a chance to speak but when the Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge was speaking, he was stopped.

Jairam Ramesh has posted about this on the social media platform X and accused the Chairman of Rajya Sabha of conducting the proceedings of the Upper House in a biased manner. He has said that the constituent parties of India Block had no option other than formally bringing a no-confidence motion against the Chairman.

Calling the decision to bring a no-confidence motion against the Rajya Sabha Chairman a painful one, Jairam Ramesh further said that this unprecedented step has to be taken in the interest of parliamentary democracy.

It is worth noting that this is the first time in the country's parliamentary history that the opposition parties have brought a no-confidence motion in the Rajya Sabha to remove a Vice President from his post.

BJD distanced itself from the no-confidence motion

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has distanced itself from the no-confidence motion brought in the Rajya Sabha to remove Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar from his post. BJD Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sasmit Patra has said that this motion has been brought by the India Block.

BJD is not a component of the India Block. He has clarified that BJD will remain neutral on this motion. Dr. Patra has also said that this is a subject with which we are not related.

Know the procedure for bringing a no-confidence motion

A no-confidence motion can be brought in the Rajya Sabha with the signatures of at least 50 members under Article 67B of the Constitution to remove the Vice President from his post. According to the rules, the relevant motion should be submitted to the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha 14 days in advance.

If the motion is passed by a majority of the members present in the Rajya Sabha, it is sent to the Lok Sabha. After the Rajya Sabha passes a resolution to remove the Vice President from office, the consent of the Lok Sabha is also necessary.
