The Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that the idea and purpose of the old criminal laws designed by the British was to punish and enslave Indians, while the justice code strengthens the spirit of the basis of democracy - "of the people, by the people, for the people."

While Prime Minister also said that the old criminal laws were a means of oppression and exploitation of Indians for the British rule. Here he also saw the demo of the laws implemented in Chandigarh - Indian Justice Code, Indian Civil Defence Code and Indian Evidence Act.

Laws were instruments of suppression and exploitation by British

These laws were instruments of suppression and exploitation by the British. These laws were made when the British regime was ready to do anything to maintain its hold in India." The country has to get out of that mindset PM Modi said, "The freedom struggle of 1857 shook the roots of British rule, then in 1860 the British implemented the Indian Penal Code IPC. A few years later, the Indian Penal Act was introduced, the first structure of CrPC came into existence. The idea and purpose of these laws was to punish Indians and keep them enslaved.

Purpose of these laws was to punish Indians

Unfortunately, for decades after independence, our laws continued to revolve around the same penal code and punitive mindset, which was used by treating citizens like slaves. Minor changes were made from time to time, but the character remained intact. Why should we continue such laws in an independent country which were made for slaves?

But the character remained intact

The country has to get out of that colonial mindset and therefore, on August 15, from the Red Fort, I make a resolution in front of the country... Our judicial code is strengthening the spirit of 'of the people, by the people, for the people', which is the basis of democracy.

Highlighting the time and efforts that went into the creation of the three new criminal laws - the Indian Justice Code, the Indian Civil Defence Code and the Indian Evidence Act - the Prime Minister said that these laws incorporated the suggestions and guidance of various Chief Justices of India, Chief Justices of High Courts, the Supreme Court, 16 High Courts, judicial academics, several law institutes, people from civil society, etc.

PM expressed gratitude to the court

PM also thanked the Supreme Court, judges and all the High Courts of the country for their contribution in making this law.

PM Modi said, "In January 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs had sought several suggestions. These laws include the suggestions and guidance of the Chief Justices of India, High Court, Supreme Court, Chief Justices of 16 High Courts, judicial academics, many law institutions, people from civil society and many wise people.

All these people debated, deliberated and collected experiences for many years. The practical aspect of every law was seen, it was tested on the parameters of the future, only then the Indian Judicial Code has come before us in this form. For this, I express special gratitude to the Supreme Court, the honorable judges and all the High Courts of the country.

'Code' has come into force

The Prime Minister congratulated all the countrymen on the implementation of these laws. He said, "At a time when the country is moving forward with the resolve of developed India, when 75 years of the Constitution have been completed, it is a great thing that the 'Indian Judicial Code' inspired by the spirit of the Constitution The 'Code' has come into force. This is a concrete effort towards fulfilling the ideals that our Constitution has seen for the citizens of the country.

Urge everyone to watch live demonstration

I was watching the live demonstration of how these laws are to be implemented. I urge everyone to watch the live demonstration. I wish all the countrymen on the implementation of the Indian Justice Code, the Indian Civil Security Code and congratulate all those associated with the Chandigarh Administration.

Implementation of the Indian Justice Code

The new criminal laws, which were implemented across the country on July 1, 2024, aim to make India's legal system more transparent, efficient and adapted to the needs of contemporary society.
