Roorkee: Under construction bridge sank in the canal in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. This sudden accident has raised questions on the safety standards related to bridge construction in the state. Bridge was built by stopping the water
Foundation stone of this bridge was laid by the Chief Minister in 2023. The Public Works Department (PWD) was entrusted with its responsibility. Actually, after the temporary closure of water in Ganganahar, the construction of the bridge had gained momentum, after which the contractor prepared the structure of the bridge and tied it over the canal. But, the bridge collapsed after the water came on the night of 30 October.
Columns collapsed due to water
PWD says that there has been no major damage due to the collapse of the bridge. The bridge fell down due to a wire opening. All the goods are safe. He said that the bridge was erected on VT columns, but the columns collapsed due to the speed of water.
No worker was there due to Diwali
In this case, PWD Secretary Pankaj Pandey has formed a team for preliminary investigation. Other reasons for the collapse of the bridge are being investigated. However, due to Diwali holiday, no employee was present here, otherwise a big accident could have happened.
Earlier on November 12 last year, on Diwali, the Silkyara tunnel accident in Uttarkashi shook the whole world. A similar accident has happened in 2021 as well

This accident reminds us of a bridge accident in Roorkee in 2012, when the structure of the bridge being built in front of the Municipal Corporation was also washed away and four workers were trapped in it. Similarly, in 2023, the Solani bridge of Roorkee was also washed away due to the monsoon disaster, due to which floods wreaked havoc in the lower areas.
