But we never felt the burden of poverty. Because a person who wears good shoes, if he does not have shoes, then he feels that this is a deficiency, but we never wore shoes in our life.

So how did we know that wearing shoes is also a big thing. We were not in a position to compare, my mother used to work very hard. My father used to work very hard.

PM Modi said that my father was very disciplined, he used to leave home every morning at around 4 or 4:30 am, used to visit many temples after travelling long distances and then reach his shop. The Prime Minister said that my father used to wear traditional leather shoes, which were handmade in the village, these were very hard, while walking those shoes used to make a clicking sound, when my father used to go to the shop, the villagers used to say that we used to guess the time by listening to the sound of his footsteps that yes, Damodar Bhai is going.

PM Modi said that my mother also used to work so that there is no difficulty in the circumstances of the house, but despite all this, these circumstances of living in poverty never created a negative impact on our mind. He said that when I talk about my family, in my family, father, mother, we brothers and sisters, my uncles and aunts, grandparents, everyone lived together.

We used to live in a very small house, perhaps this place is very big where we are sitting for the podcast today. There was not even a window in my house.

There was no question of me ever wearing shoes to school'

During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi said that I remember that there was no question of me ever wearing shoes to school. One day I was going to school, I met my uncle on the way. He said, 'Hey! You go to school like this, you don't have shoes. So, at that time, he bought canvas shoes and made me wear them. At that time their price would be 10-12 rupees.

Those shoes were made of canvas, and they would get stained, so what I used to do was that when the school was over in the evening, I would stay in the school for a while. And the pieces of chopsticks that the teacher used to throw away, I would collect them and bring them home. I would soak those chopstick pieces, make polish and apply it on canvas shoes and make them shiny white. That was wealth for me.
