Eight ex-Indian naval officers, who were arrested in Qatar last year in connection with the Dahra Global case, saw a significant development on Thursday as the Qatari Court commuted their death penalty sentences to jail terms. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a press statement confirming the court's decision.

Ministry of External Affairs Statement: The MEA, in its statement, acknowledged the verdict of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, emphasizing that the sentences have been reduced. The ministry awaits the detailed judgment and is closely coordinating with the legal team in Qatar for further guidance.

Highlighting their commitment to providing support, the MEA stated, "We are in close touch with the legal team as well as the family members to decide on the next steps." The Indian Ambassador to Qatar and other officials were present during the Court of Appeal proceedings, standing by the family members. The MEA reiterated its commitment to extending consular and legal assistance and pledged to continue engaging with Qatari authorities on the matter.

Imprisonment of Indian Naval officers since October 2022

The eight Indian nationals, all former naval personnel, have been held in Qatar since October 2022, facing accusations related to alleged spying on a submarine program. The exact charges leading to their initial death sentence have not been officially disclosed.

Earlier this month, the MEA disclosed that two hearings had taken place in the case, with appeals filed alongside the families. The detainees had a final appeal, with hearings conducted on November 30th and November 23rd. The MEA spokesperson, Bagchi, indicated that the next hearing is imminent.

Indian-Qatari Bilateral Relations

The recent development coincides with the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad, during the COP28 summit in Dubai. The leaders discussed the overall bilateral relationship and the well-being of the Indian community residing in Qatar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strength of the bilateral partnership, marking a crucial context amid ongoing legal proceedings involving Indian nationals in Qatar.
