In the new report of CERT-In ‘India Ransomware Report 2022’, it has been reported that ransomware attacks have increased in India. This report is from last year i.e. 2022. The biggest impact of these attacks has been on the IT sector. Apart from this, healthcare, education, and transportation have also been affected. In the last few years, the risk of cyber-attacks has been increasing. This problem is also very serious for the Government of India. According to a recent report, the risk of ransomware is increasing. It is being told that the threat of ransomware is increasing in 2022 and this year ransomware gangs have increased their attacks with widespread, frequency and complexity. According to India’s nodal cyber security agency, Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the country witnessed a 53% year-on-year increase in ransomware incidents in the year 2022. According to CERT-In’s ‘India Ransomware Report 2022’, IT and ITeS were the most targeted sectors, followed by finance and marketing, education, healthcare, transport, and energy in the list of major affected sectors.
The report pointed out that Lockbit was the dominant variant seen in the Indian context. After this, Macop and DJVU/Stop ransomware were the most used. Apart from this, many new variants like Vice Society, Bluesky, etc. were also seen in 2022. The leaked ransomware source code is being forked to launch new ransomware brands, the report said.

These variants attacked, and when it comes to the big industry, Lockbit, Hive and ALPHV/Blackcat, black bag variants became major threats. Makop and the Phobos ransomware family mainly targeted medium and small organizations. On an individual level, the Djvu/Stop variant continued to dominate the attacks over the past few years.
The CERT-In report states that most ransomware groups exploited known vulnerabilities for which patches are available. Product-wise vulnerabilities are being exploited in Microsoft Exchange, Citrix, Fortinet, SonicWall, Sophos, Zoho, and Palo Alto.
According to the report, the average recovery time for infection in a very large infrastructure network is about 10 days. When it comes to small networks/infrastructure, the restoration time is about 3 days and for personal systems, it is 1 day. The report also states that ransomware manufacturers are focusing on speed and performance. A portion of the file is being targeted for encryption to save time instead of encrypting all the files.
