As per an official statement released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on March 1, 2024, nearly 97.62 percent of the Rs 2000 currency notes that were in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have been reintegrated into the banking system. This indicates a notable change in the circulation pattern of high-value banknotes over a relatively brief period

Reduction in Overall Worth

The aggregate value of Rs. 2000 banknotes in circulation, previously recorded at Rs. 3.56 lakh crore as of May 19, 2023, when the decision to withdraw these notes was made, has drastically fallen to Rs. 8,470 crore by the end of business on February 29, 2024.

This notable decrease signifies a substantial decline in the prominence of Rs 2000 currency notes within the economy during this defined timeframe.

Continuation of Legal Tender Status

Despite the decline in circulation, the RBI reiterated that Rs. 2000 banknotes continue to be legal tender. This reaffirmation underscores the continued acceptance and validity of these high-denomination currency notes for financial transactions and settlements.

Withdrawal as Part of the Clean Note Policy

The central bank's decision to withdraw high-value banknotes from circulation aligns with its clean note policy, aimed at maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the currency system. This strategic move reflects the RBI's commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of the monetary system and promoting transparency in currency transactions.

Deposit and Exchange Facilities

Initially, the facility for deposit and/or exchange of Rs 2000 banknotes was available at all bank branches across the country until October 7, 2023.

Subsequently, starting from October 9, 2023, RBI Issue Offices initiated the acceptance of Rs 2000 banknotes from individuals/entities for deposit into their bank accounts.

Moreover, individuals can utilize India Post services to dispatch Rs 2000 banknotes from any post office nationwide to any RBI Issue Office for crediting them to their bank accounts.
