If talking about his Professional career, Mr. Alagh was the Chairperson of Institute of Rural Management Anand from 2006-2012, where he succeeded Dr. Verghese Kurien. He was also the chancellor of the Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar and Vice-Chairman, Sardar Patel Institute of Economic And Social Research , Ahmedabad.
He was appointed as the Union Minster based on his life achievements in academia and public policy and headed three Ministries with independent charge, including Ministry of Power, Ministry of Science of Technology and Planning and Programme Implementation.
Between 1992 to 1996, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Jawahar Lal Nehru University where he raised non-government funding from zero to 25%, recruited 23 scholars from the finest universities around the world and as a member of the International Rectors’ Group which was sponsored by New York University, pushed the university towards globalization.
As the Chairman of Agricultural Prices Commission between 1982-1983 he re-organized Indian planning on an agro-climactic basis. During 1980-1982 he was the Executive Vice-Chairman of Narmada Planning Group.
Many well known people have shared their experience of working with him and how the person was. Saswata Biswas, professor at SPIASER, says Mr. Alagh was “inclusive in his approach to development, and said that it could not be done at the cost of farmers. He knew what rural India needed and had ground level knowledge, say about how much money a groundnut farmer in Jamnagar was able to make. This is what we learnt from him. Not only was he an academic and economist, but also an administrator who had a deep understand of Indian polity.”
