Satnam Singh Sandhu appointed as Rajya Sabha member by President Murmu
Chandigarh University founder-chancellor, Satnam Singh Sandhu, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha, according to a notification from the home ministry on Tuesday. President Droupadi Murmu nominated Sandhu to the upper house of Parliament.
Expressing gratitude, Sandhu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity to represent the aspirations of the people. He pledged to work towards strengthening efforts for a 'viksit Bharat' by 2047.

Contribution of Satnam Singh Sandhu in various fields
Hailing from a farming background, Sandhu overcame educational challenges to become one of India's leading educationists. The notification highlighted his role in establishing the Chandigarh Group of Colleges in 2001 and founding the Chandigarh University in 2012.
Aside from his contributions to education, Sandhu, an agriculturist, is actively engaged in community efforts to enhance health and wellness. He also promotes communal harmony through his two NGOs—the Indian Minorities Foundation and the New India Development Foundation.
In response to the nomination, Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar welcomed Sandhu, acknowledging his extensive work in community service and commitment to education, innovation, and learning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed delight at Sandhu's nomination, praising him as a distinguished educationist and social worker. Modi highlighted Sandhu's efforts in national integration and working with the Indian diaspora.

BJP president J P Nadda commended Sandhu's rich experience and contributions to community service and education. He expressed confidence that Sandhu would significantly contribute to enriching the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha.
Union minister and Leader of the House, Rajya Sabha, Piyush Goyal, noted that Sandhu's nomination reflects PM Modi's commitment to including distinguished voices in the Rajya Sabha. Goyal praised Sandhu's long history of working for social upliftment and promoting knowledge.
Sandhu's nomination fills one of the twelve seats reserved for nominated members in the Rajya Sabha, leaving one vacancy in this category.
