The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to RTI (Right To Information) activist turned Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Saket Gokhale, in an alleged theft of funds case filed against him in Ahmedabad.
A bench of justices consisting of BR Gavai and Vikram Nath ordered the applicant to be released on bail after taking into account the fact that the charge sheet had already been submitted.
Gokhale was detained by the Gujarat police on December 29 while travelling via Delhi. He had filed a petition with the Supreme Court to challenge the Gujarat high court’s February decision to deny him bail.
The case concerns the alleged misappropriation of money over Rs. 72 lakh that he is accused of having raised through crowdfunding during the Covid pandemic. He is accused of having solicited funds from more than 1,700 people via the crowdfunding website “Our Democracy,” with the intention of using the funds for public projects like legal aid and journlism.

Police learned that the money was reportedly used for his personal needs, nevertheless. The state’s additional solicitor general (ASG), SV Raju, objected bail on the grounds that the accusations were serious.
“He (Gokhale) is known for his right to information (RTI) campaigns,” the bench commented. Why is he being detained by you?
