George Russell won the opening sprint race of the new season at the Chinese Grand Prix, securing victory for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team after an intense early duel with Lewis Hamilton.

Russell started from pole position and maintained control of the race despite repeated position changes with Hamilton during the opening laps.

Charles Leclerc finished second for Scuderia Ferrari, while Hamilton took third place.

The result strengthened Russell’s early position in the championship standings and underlined Mercedes’ strong start to the season.

Intense Early Battle for the Lead

Russell made a strong start and held the lead into the first corner but was immediately challenged by Hamilton. The two drivers exchanged the lead multiple times in the opening phase of the race.

Hamilton briefly took the lead at turn eight before Russell regained the position on the long back straight. The lead changed again through the first corner before Russell eventually reclaimed it on lap five.

Leclerc remained close behind the two leaders as the Ferrari showed improved race pace compared to qualifying.

Mercedes Shows Strong Pace

The Mercedes car once again demonstrated strong energy management across the lap. The team’s ability to maintain power on the long straight in Shanghai helped Russell defend and later extend his advantage.

Before a late safety car, Russell had built a gap of around five seconds over Leclerc.

The win followed Russell’s dominant performance at the opening round of the season at the Australian Grand Prix.

Midfield Battles and Penalties

Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren, while Kimi Antonelli secured fifth for Mercedes despite a difficult start.

Antonelli dropped from second to tenth early in the race and later received a 10 second penalty after a collision with Isack Hadjar.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen struggled throughout the race. The Red Bull Racing driver had a slow start and finished ninth after earlier describing his car as undriveable during the weekend.

Hadjar finished fifteenth.

Safety Car and Final Sprint

A safety car was deployed on lap 13 after Nico Hülkenberg stopped on track in his Audi Formula One Team car.

Most teams opted for fresh tyres during the caution period.

When racing resumed on lap 17, Russell made a strong restart while Leclerc struggled with wheelspin. With only three laps remaining, Russell maintained his lead and crossed the finish line to secure victory.

The win marked Russell’s second sprint race victory after his earlier success at the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2022.
