Bumrah returned to Team India after a long time due to back injury. In the year 2024, Bumrah proved to be the highest wicket-taker in Tests. He put 71 wickets in front of his name by the end of the year due to his excellent performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah was competing with England's Gus Atkinson, who ended the year with figures of 52 in 11 Tests.

Bumrah bowled 357 overs in Tests and maintained an excellent average of 2.96. His average throughout the year was 14.92, and he ended 2024 with an annual strike rate of just 30.1. Bumrah was the fourth bowler from India to take 70+ wickets in a calendar year in Tests. Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev had done this feat.
