IPL 2026: Shane Warne – Rajat Patidar: The 19th season of the IPL is just around the corner. However, before we dive into it, do you know about the two players who never featured in a T20 International match, yet—upon assuming the captaincy in the IPL—immediately steered their teams to a championship victory? What makes this feat even more remarkable is that both players achieved this extraordinary success during their very first season as IPL captains. There is a gap of 17 years between the historic achievements of these two players. We are, of course, talking about Shane Warne and Rajat Patidar.

In 2008, Shane Warne Led RR to Victory

In the inaugural season of the IPL, Shane Warne captained the Rajasthan Royals and guided them to the championship title. In the final match—played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai—the Rajasthan Royals, under Warne's leadership, defeated the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets to clinch the IPL 2008 trophy. However, in the years since that historic triumph, the Rajasthan Royals have not yet been able to replicate that success.

In 2025, Rajat Patidar Led RCB to Victory

Much like Shane Warne, Rajat Patidar became a captain who led his team—the Royal Challengers Bangalore—to an IPL championship, all without ever having played a single T20 International match. Under his captaincy, RCB emerged as the champions of IPL 2025, bringing an end to a 17-year-long wait for the coveted trophy. Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Punjab Kings by 6 runs in the final match played at the latter's home ground.

Warne and Patidar: Test and ODI Veterans

Shane Warne and Rajat Patidar are the only two players to have led their respective teams to an IPL title under their own captaincy without ever having played a T20 International match. However, both players have admirably represented their respective nations in the other two formats of the game—Tests and One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Shane Warne played 145 Tests and 194 ODIs for Australia, claiming a total of 1,001 wickets across both formats. Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar has played 3 Tests and 1 ODI for India so far, scoring a combined total of 85 runs.
