IPL 2026, CSK Squad Analysis: The five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, have geared up for IPL 2026. In the 19th season of the IPL—commencing on March 28—CSK is scheduled to play its opening match on March 30 in Guwahati against the Rajasthan Royals. Chennai Super Kings has completely revamped its squad for IPL 2026. Following a bottom-of-the-table finish last season, the franchise has implemented major changes, including significant investment in young talent and several high-profile player trades. CSK is now emerging as a youthful and aggressive unit, poised to showcase a blend of seasoned experience and fresh energy. With these moves, the team has actively sought to shed its long-standing ‘Daddy Army’ image. In fact, CSK has historically been known for placing its bets on senior players; however, this time around, they are setting out to claim the title with a squad featuring young talent.

Known historically as the ‘Daddy Army,’ the CSK squad will now attempt to clinch the title powered by the strength of its young players.

These Players Will Once Again Be Seen in the CSK Jersey

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad remains the backbone of the team, providing stability to the top order. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni is set to reprise his role as the finisher; his mere presence serves as a source of immense mental strength for the squad. In the middle order, Shivam Dube offers both power-hitting prowess and a viable bowling option. The remaining retained players include Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Urvil Patel, Noor Ahmad, Nathan Ellis, Khaleel Ahmed, Shreyas Gopal, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary, Jamie Overton, and Ramakrishna Ghosh. These players will be eager to avenge their defeat in the previous season by winning the championship title this time around.

CSK Executes Its Biggest Trade

This season, star wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson is set to be seen sporting the CSK jersey. CSK acquired Sanju Samson via a trade with the Rajasthan Royals—a move designed to provide an explosive start at the top of the order, either as an opener or within the top three, courtesy of the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman. This trade was executed by sending Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to RR, marking a significant shift in the team's strategic approach. Jadeja had been a pivotal player for the team for years, but he will now be playing against his former franchise.

CSK Team: Strengths and Weaknesses

Batting depth stands as one of CSK's major strengths. With batsmen like Ruturaj, Sanju, Ayush, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and Dhoni, the lineup offers a perfect blend of power-hitting and anchoring capabilities, extending from the very top of the order right down to the bottom. Furthermore, the spin attack is robust; the likes of Noor Ahmad, Rahul Chahar, Shreyas Gopal, Akeal Hosein, and Prashant Veer are expected to thrive and extract maximum advantage from the pitches at Chepauk.

In addition to these specialists, the team's array of all-rounders provides valuable tactical flexibility. However, the pace attack lacks depth. While Khaleel Ahmed serves as a key fast bowler, the unit may face challenges during the death overs or when playing on flat pitches.

Summary

Although Nathan Ellis and Matt Henry are competent bowlers, the squad currently lacks a world-class speedster capable of consistently clocking high speeds. Managing Dhoni's age and fitness will also be a major challenge for the team.
