Major Blow for CSK Ahead of IPL 2026: Star Fast Bowler Ruled Out of Entire Tournament
The Chennai Super Kings finished in last place in the IPL last year, and at that time, this player was given an opportunity in only one match.
The Chennai Super Kings—who were set to enter IPL 2026 with renewed vigor and optimism, leaving behind the poor performance of the previous season—have suffered a severe setback. Just nine days before the tournament is scheduled to begin, Chennai's bowling attack appears to be significantly weakened. According to reports, Chennai Super Kings' Australian fast bowler, Nathan Ellis, has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to an injury.
Coming so close to the start of the tournament, Ellis's injury has thrown CSK's preparations and strategies into disarray.
In the new season, there were expectations that this pacer would receive more opportunities; however, that hope has now been dashed.
Reason Behind Nathan Ellis's Withdrawal
According to a report by *Sportstar*, Australian pacer Nathan Ellis is grappling with a hamstring injury. He is unlikely to make a full recovery by the time the tournament begins—or even shortly thereafter—which means he will be unable to participate in the competition. The report cites CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, who confirmed this development. Viswanathan acknowledged that this is a major blow for the team and stated that they have already begun the search for a replacement.
Ellis has been struggling with his hamstring since the beginning of this year. He had also sustained an injury during the BBL season in January, which prevented him from playing in the final matches of the tournament.
Setback for CSK's Preparations
The 31-year-old right-arm fast bowler, Nathan Ellis, was acquired by the Chennai Super Kings during the Mega Auction held prior to the last season for a base price of ₹2 crore. However, he was given an opportunity in only one match during IPL 2025, in which he claimed one wicket. Despite this, the franchise retained him, and he was considered a key component of CSK's bowling attack for this year. Now, however, his injury has thrown CSK's preparations into disarray.
Summary
Apart from Ellis, Chennai has New Zealand star Matt Henry as an overseas fast-bowling option, whose participation was already confirmed. The question now remains whether Chennai will opt to bring in a new overseas bowler to replace Ellis, or if they will proceed through the entire season relying solely on England all-rounder Jamie Overton.
