As India prepare to face England in the semi final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, attention has turned to the potential battle between Sanju Samson and England fast bowler Jofra Archer at Wankhede Stadium.

While discussions continue around speculation of a possible ban involving Samson, statistics suggest his immediate challenge could come from Archer’s pace and accuracy with the new ball.

Data from a bilateral series earlier this year indicates that Archer dismissed Samson three times in 23 balls across five innings. The dismissals came largely from hard, good length deliveries, a zone that has consistently troubled the Indian batter.

Since early 2025, Samson has averaged 18.13 against pace bowling. Fourteen of his 15 dismissals to seamers have come from good length or slightly shorter deliveries. Archer has relied on this method throughout the tournament, regularly hitting hard lengths rather than depending only on swing.

The contest could become more challenging for Samson because of the pitch conditions at Wankhede. During the tournament, deliveries pitched under eight metres with the new ball have produced 10 wickets at an average of 16.5. The surface has provided early carry and slight seam movement.

Archer’s Powerplay performance in the tournament highlights his impact. The England pacer has taken eight wickets in the first six overs. Six of those wickets came from balls pitched shorter than eight metres. He has averaged 8.67 in that phase while conceding close to a run a ball.

India will look to counter England’s pace attack when the two teams meet in the semi final clash.
