Zhizhen Zhang Makes History, Upsets 5th Seed Casper Ruud at US Open 2023
In a stunning upset at the US Open, China's Zhizhen Zhang made history by defeating the 5th seed, Casper Ruud, in a gripping five-set match. The 67th-ranked Zhang secured a remarkable victory with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0, 2-6, becoming the first male player from China to conquer a top-five player on the international tennis stage.
Zhang's triumph was underpinned by his tenacity and skillful play. Despite Ruud's spirited performance, Zhang's strategic approach and powerful serving proved pivotal throughout the match. Zhang's win percentages on both his first and second serves surpassed Ruud's, highlighting the strength of his game.
The contest began with Zhang taking the opening set 6-4. Ruud, however, showed his resilience by battling back to win a hard-fought second set with a score of 7-5. Yet, Zhang maintained his momentum, taking the third set 6-2.
In an unexpected twist, Ruud secured a 6-0 victory in the fourth set, seemingly gaining the upper hand. However, Zhang was not to be deterred. Demonstrating his determination and showcasing his best tennis, Zhang returned for the deciding fifth set with renewed vigor.
During the fifth set, Zhang's strategic toilet break momentarily halted the match's momentum. Despite Ruud's frustrations and protests, Zhang's interruption in play seemed to energize him. He broke Ruud's serve in the opening game, setting the tone for the remainder of the set.
Zhang's relentless performance continued, as he secured a commanding lead of 5-1. Although Ruud managed to hold his serve, Zhang's focused play ultimately led to his victory. On match point, Zhang delivered a superb backhand volley, sealing his place in the third round.
Looking ahead, Zhang is set to face Australia's Rinky Hijikata in the next round, with the opportunity to advance further and reach the Grand Slam's last 16 for the first time.
Zhang's victory adds to the growing list of surprises in the US Open's second round. Ruud is now the second top-10 player to exit the tournament early, following Stefanos Tsitsipas' earlier defeat to the 128th-ranked Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker.
Overall, Zhang's historic triumph against Casper Ruud highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport and the remarkable achievements that can arise on the grand stage of professional tennis.
