In a significant diplomatic development, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Head of State of the Sultanate of Oman, is set to commence his historic three-day state visit to India today, Friday. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) disclosed the details of his visit in an official release last Sunday, highlighting the notable delegation accompanying him, comprising senior ministers and officials.

India and Oman's enduring friendship, deeply rooted in historical, cultural, and economic ties, spans over 5,000 years of people-to-people contact. The diplomatic ties were formally established in 1955, and in 2008, the relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership.

The MEA emphasized that this visit marks a significant milestone, being Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's first state visit to India. Upon his arrival, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is scheduled to meet with the Oman Sultan in the national capital today.

The Sultan's visit is in response to an invitation extended by President Droupadi Murmu. On December 16, Sultan Haitham will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Murmu. The itinerary includes visits to the National Gallery of Modern Art and a meeting with PM Modi at Hyderabad House on the second day, followed by a luncheon hosted by the Indian Prime Minister.

The MEA release underlines the visit as an opportunity to explore avenues for future collaboration between India and Oman, focusing on regional stability, progress, and prosperity.

Notably, the Indian diaspora in Oman, numbering over 700,000 individuals post-pandemic, plays a pivotal role in the country's economic development and cultural diversity. Oman is India's closest defense partner in the Gulf region, with defense cooperation standing as a key pillar of their strategic partnership. Regular bilateral exercises and service-level staff talks are conducted between the armed forces of both nations.

Oman's active participation in the G20 Summit under India's presidency further underscores the strong relationship between the two countries. Over 150 working group meetings saw Oman's involvement, with nine ministers participating in various G20 ministerial meetings. This visit is poised to strengthen diplomatic ties and foster collaboration between India and the Sultanate of Oman.
