One of the biggest and brightest moons of 2023, the supermoon, will be visible today, giving skygazers a treat. A supermoon is so named because, when it is full, the moon is at its closest point to Earth, making it appear substantially larger in the sky.

Referred to as a blue moon

The moon will be 357,244 kilometers away from Earth today. Additionally, it should be mentioned that this specific full moon will be August's second after the first one on August 1. It will therefore be referred to as a blue moon.

In that case, a "super blue moon" will be what we experience.

Unique in Occurrence

The event is noteworthy because a blue moon is linked to something unique. The expression "once in a blue moon" is used frequently. Similar to a full moon, a blue moon is unique because it occurs after a season with four full moons.

When can you view the supermoon?

According to space.com, the second supermoon of the month will rise at 7.10 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (4.30 a.m. IST on Thursday).

According to the American space agency NASA, the precise moment when it will be at its brightest and largest will occur two hours later. On Thursday, at approximately 6.46 am EDT (4.16 pm), the blue moon will set.

Although the supermoon will rise in the US during the evening, it will be best seen when there is less natural light.

India residents should have a good view because the supermoon will rise extremely early in the morning.

Will Saturn be visible along with the supermoon?

Saturn, which will be seen close to the moon, may also be seen by those scanning the skies, according to CBS News. As the evening wears on, it will appear to swing around the moon in a clockwise direction, according to NASA.

Saturn should be visible just by gazing up, but viewers will be able to recognise some of the planet's distinctive characteristics with the aid of binoculars or a telescope.

The following super blue moon will appear after 14 years

NASA predicts that the incredibly unusual phenomena will happen again in January 2037 and then again in March 2037.
