Taiwan Earthquake| (Agency Input): A strong earthquake struck Taiwan early on April 3, affecting the entire island. Reports from the  Associated Press (AP) revealed that buildings collapsed due to the quake. Taiwan's earthquake monitoring agency recorded the magnitude as 7.2, while the US Geological Survey estimated it to be 7.5.

Magnitude of the Earthquake

According to Wu Chien-fu, head of Taipei's Seismology Centre, this quake is the strongest in 25 years. He compared it to the devastating 1999 earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.6 and claimed 2,400 lives.

Witnesses in Shanghai, China, reported feeling the tremors. Chinese media also noted tremors in Fujian province's cities like Fuzhou, Ningde, Quanzhou, and Xiamen.

Damage Assessment

Television footage showed buildings shaking in Hualien, Taiwan's eastern city. Some people are trapped in collapsed buildings, especially in Hualien. The eastern coast faces rockslides and landslides. The Taipei city government reported no major damage yet.

Response and Recovery

Taipei City's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) resumed services soon after. The high-speed rail operator reported no damage or injuries but expects delays for inspections. Despite the earthquake, operations continue at the Southern Taiwan Science Park, where major companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) operate.

As Taiwan grapples with the aftermath of this powerful earthquake, efforts are underway to assess the extent of the damage and provide support to those affected by the disaster
