Tamil Nadu CM Expresses Strong Disapproval of Poor Road Conditions

During a meeting on monsoon preparedness, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed his dissatisfaction with the deplorable state of roads in Chennai and its suburbs. He received numerous complaints about the poor road conditions, leading to difficulties for motorists and minor accidents. In response, he announced plans to conduct a survey of the city in the coming week, stating firmly, "This is not acceptable."

Stalin issued instructions to the Greater Chennai Corporation to prioritize the completion of ongoing stormwater drain projects and directed district authorities to expedite roadwork while maintaining high-quality standards. He identified infrastructure work, such as drainage, water pipelines, sewage lines, and a lack of maintenance, as contributing factors to the road's deteriorating condition.

The Chief Minister stressed the need for a transformation in the state's road infrastructure, emphasizing that roads should be in excellent condition, and appreciated by all. He urged all ministers and secretaries to give serious attention to this matter, pledging personal oversight of the ongoing work.

Tamil Nadu typically receives 443 mm of rainfall during the northeast monsoon from October to December, accounting for 48% of the state's annual rainfall. Stalin emphasized the government's commitment to disaster resilience and coordination among all departments to protect people from harm.

In a previous meeting led by Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena on September 14, officials received instructions on preventative measures for the upcoming monsoon season. Approximately ₹716 crore in allocations over the past two years have contributed to mitigation efforts, reducing disaster-prone areas from 4,399 to 3,770.

The government has also installed early warning systems in 424 locations, primarily in coastal areas. Stalin directed district collectors to ensure readiness at relief centers, provide access to safe drinking water, prevent electrocution-related deaths, and clear encroachments along water bodies. He stressed the importance of informing the public when releasing surplus water from dams and recommended the formation of multi-disciplinary committees to monitor flood-prone areas.
