Asha Bhosle: A Legend
Asha Bhosle is one of Bollywood's legendary singers. She first cast the spell of her voice upon Bollywood films in the 1950s. Her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, was a prominent singer during the 1940s and 50s. Hailing from the Mangeshkar family, Asha, much like her sister, possessed a melodious voice. However, before lending her voice to major films, she gained recognition by singing in numerous low-budget productions.
The duo of Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi was a massive hit during that era. Together, they sang iconic tracks such as 'Maang Ke Saath Tumhara', 'Saathi Haath Badhana', and 'Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri'. The magic created by Sahir Ludhianvi's lyrics, combined with the vocal chemistry between Rafi and Asha, captivated audiences everywhere. She lent her voice to numerous films throughout the 1960s, including *Gumrah*, *Hamraaz*, and *Aadmi Aur Insaan*. In 1966, she collaborated with R.D. Burman to sing songs for the film *Teesri Manzil*, which garnered immense acclaim.
Then came the era when Asha Bhosle began singing Bollywood's hit dance numbers. It is said that when she first heard the song 'Aaja Aaja', she felt she would be unable to sing to its Western-style musical arrangement. Burman offered to modify the tune, but Asha declined. She subsequently accepted it as a challenge and, after ten days of rigorous rehearsal, recorded the track. To this day, the song remains on everyone's lips.
She did not limit her career to this genre alone; Asha Bhosle also sang Ghazals. It was for this work that she received the first National Award of her career. Subsequently, she sang for films of the 1990s and 2000s, including *Rangeela*, *Lagaan*, *Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya*, *Lucky*, and several others.
Asha Bhosle even performed a concert in Dubai at the age of 91. Here, she won the hearts of Gen Z as well by singing Punjabi singer Karan Aujla's hit song, 'Tauba Tauba'.
