Delhi Weather Update: Heavy Rains Accompanied by Strong Winds Lash Delhi-NCR; IMD Issues Yellow Alert
It has been raining across Delhi-NCR since Friday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for the entire city today, warning of the possibility of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Delhi's Weather: The sporadic showers that have been sprinkling over the national capital—Delhi—and its surrounding areas (Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad) over the past day or two appear to be intensifying today. Today—March 20—the weather has taken a complete turn. Friday morning began with thunder, lightning, and cool showers; while this may have slightly slowed down the city's pace, it has certainly brought smiles to the faces of those troubled by the rising mercury. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for the entire city for today.
What is the Weather Forecast for Delhi-NCR?
According to the Meteorological Department, the skies will remain overcast with dense clouds today. From the afternoon through the evening, there is a likelihood of intermittent light to moderate rainfall. The most significant factor to note is the wind speed; gusty winds ranging from 30 to 50 kilometers per hour could sweep across Delhi-NCR today. In terms of temperature, the maximum mercury is expected to drop to between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius today, while the minimum temperature is projected to hover around 16 to 18 degrees. With humidity levels in the air reaching up to 90%, the weather is expected to remain cool and refreshing.
Areas Expected to be Affected by the Rain
According to the IMD, this change in weather patterns applies to the entirety of Delhi and the NCR region. From North-West Delhi all the way to Shahdara and Central Delhi, rain is expected to fall across all areas. In addition, warnings regarding lightning strikes have also been issued for neighboring cities such as Faridabad and Noida. However, the rainfall will not be continuous; rather, it will occur intermittently.
Advisory for Precaution
In view of the changing weather conditions and strong winds, the administration has advised the public to remain vigilant. Roads may become slippery due to the rain; therefore, exercise caution and maintain a controlled speed while driving. During the storm, avoid standing under trees, utility poles, or old, dilapidated buildings. Refrain from venturing into open fields during thunderstorms and seek shelter in safe locations.
Will the Heat Return Tomorrow?
This respite may prove to be temporary. Starting March 21, the skies are expected to gradually clear up. Although there remains a possibility of isolated light drizzle on March 22 and 23, the most significant weather activity is expected to unfold today. After March 24, the mercury will begin to rise once again, with maximum temperatures potentially reaching between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius—signaling the return of the true March heat.
