Earthquake tremors were experienced in Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, and Chandigarh. The quake shook several parts of Jammu & Kashmir, leaving the local population frightened following two successive tremors. A similar scene unfolded in Delhi-NCR, where office workers in Noida evacuated their workplaces due to the tremors.

Meanwhile, residents in residential areas also stepped out of their homes. Nevertheless, there are currently no reports of any damage caused by this earthquake from the national capital or other affected areas.

In Delhi-NCR as well, people rushed out of their offices and homes. However, there have been no reports of any loss of life or property from any of these regions so far.

5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region. Consequently, a quake with a magnitude of 5.9 was recorded in Afghanistan. As for Delhi-NCR, this marks the third earthquake to strike the region this year. Prior to this, tremors were felt twice in January. The first occurred on January 19—a 2.8 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in North Delhi.

Earthquake Strikes Delhi on the Night of January 30

Subsequently, on the night of January 30, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck. Its epicenter was located approximately 60–80 kilometers northeast of Delhi. However, neither of these two tremors resulted in any damage. It is worth noting that this region is considered highly sensitive in terms of seismic activity; the national capital, Delhi, in particular, falls within one of the zones with the highest probability of earthquakes.

Which Seismic Zone Does Delhi Fall Under?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has categorized the country into four seismic zones—Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV, and Zone V—based on earthquake intensity and frequency. Zone II is classified as a low-risk seismic zone. This zone includes Prayagraj (UP), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Durgapur (Bengal), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Bhopal (MP), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), and Jaipur (Rajasthan). Zone IV falls within a high-risk seismic zone. Here, earthquake intensities can range from 6.0 to 6.9. Delhi is also situated in this very zone.
