Fire Breaks Out at Mumbai Airport's Terminal 1; Plumes of Smoke Cause Panic
Chaos ensued at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Thursday evening following a fire at Terminal 1.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the fire broke out within the ground-plus-three-story structure of Terminal 1. The blaze was primarily confined to the ground floor, near the 1-B Circle area. Upon receiving reports of the incident, teams from the Fire Department, the Police, and the Municipal Corporation rushed to the scene.
However, a major relief was that the fire was quickly contained, and airport operations remained unaffected.
Videos circulating on the social media platform 'X' showed thick plumes of smoke billowing inside the airport premises, creating a chaotic atmosphere for a brief period.
According to a spokesperson for the airport administration, the fire started around 6:10 PM, and preliminary inquiries point to a short circuit as the probable cause. Emergency response teams took immediate action, extinguishing the fire within minutes; this averted a major disaster and prevented the blaze from spreading further.
Officials clarified that there have been no reports of any injuries or casualties resulting from the incident. Despite the fire, all flight operations and other airport activities continued to function normally.
Upon receiving the alert regarding the fire, several fire tenders were dispatched to the site. The situation was brought completely under control.
Summary
Currently, a detailed investigation into the incident is underway. While it is preliminarily suspected to be a case of a short circuit, officials are examining all aspects of the incident.
