The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is now implementing an AI-based dashcam monitoring system to oversee a network of 40,000 kilometers of national highways. This system will identify over 30 types of road defects and illegal activities, thereby ensuring timely repairs and maintenance. This initiative is expected to enhance road safety and provide travelers with a safer and smoother journey.

The surveillance of the country's national highways is set to become significantly stricter and more high-tech. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to implement an AI-based dashcam monitoring system to optimize highway operations and maintenance. Under this initiative, a vast network of national highways spanning approximately 40,000 kilometers will be brought under coverage.

Under this new framework, specialized dashboard cameras will be installed on route-patrolling vehicles, which will conduct comprehensive surveys of the roads on a weekly basis. These cameras will capture high-resolution images and videos, which will be analyzed using machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence.

AI System to Independently Identify Defects

The AI system will be capable of independently identifying over 30 different types of defects present on the road. These include issues such as potholes, cracks, damaged road surfaces, faded lane markings, faulty streetlights, broken crash barriers, and unauthorized road cuts. Additionally, the system will monitor for illegal parking and encroachments.

Development of a Specialized IT Platform

A specialized IT platform will be developed to support this entire framework, featuring dashboards for data management, AI analytics, and monitoring. This will enable the comparison of road conditions at different points in time, thereby allowing for the effective tracking of the progress of repair works.

Summary

According to the NHAI, this initiative will ensure timely repairs on highways, lead to a reduction in road accidents, and provide travelers with a safer and smoother journey experience.
