MS Dhoni Ditches Jersey Number 7 Ahead of IPL—Is There a Connection to 'Sir' Jadeja?
Ahead of the 2026 IPL season, MS Dhoni has signaled his intention to switch from his iconic jersey number 7 to number 8. This decision has sparked widespread speculation: Is it a tribute to Ravindra Jadeja?
Ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has created a buzz across the cricketing world by changing his jersey number. Having long been synonymous with the number 7, Dhoni may now be seen sporting the number 8. Notably, however, this particular jersey is not in the Chennai team's signature yellow color.
Part of a team strategy? Or merely a marketing stunt? Neither CSK nor Dhoni has yet offered an official explanation for this move.
He wrote a cryptic post on social media, Dhoni wrote: "Some numbers stay with you... but today, I am switching to 8. You will find out why soon."
The biggest question remains: Is this change merely a promotional stunt, or does it conceal a deeper emotional or strategic significance? Meanwhile, it is also speculated that this change might be linked to jersey number management within the team.
One theory that has emerged suggests that this decision could be connected to Ravindra Jadeja, who previously wore the number 8 jersey. However, since he has now become part of the Rajasthan Royals squad, this number had become vacant. Consequently, Dhoni's adoption of this number is being viewed by some as a form of tribute, although this has not been officially confirmed.
On the other hand, some cricket experts regard this as a strategic branding and marketing move. On a grand stage like the IPL, changing one's jersey number can serve as a means to heighten fan interest and boost merchandise sales.
It is also plausible that the CSK team management is working on a new strategy for the upcoming season, one that involves presenting the roles and identities of senior players in a fresh light.
As of now, neither Dhoni nor the franchise has issued an official statement regarding the actual reason behind this change. However, one thing remains certain: every step Dhoni takes is a calculated one, and this instance is undoubtedly backed by a significant underlying reason—one that may soon be revealed.
BCCI Retired Dhoni's Jersey in 2023
The BCCI made the decision to retire Mahendra Singh Dhoni's iconic number 7 jersey in 2023. Prior to this, in 2017, the signature number 10 jersey of the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar had also been permanently retired. Born on July 7, 1981, Dhoni had originally adopted this number specifically because it corresponded with his date of birth.
