Nashik: Fraudulent Astrologer Who 'Read Palms' of Leaders Accused of Rape; 58 Obscene Videos Spark Outrage
Ashok Kharat, a self-proclaimed astrologer from Nashik, has been arrested on charges of raping a woman, blackmailing, and propagating superstition.
In Nashik, Maharashtra, the police have arrested Ashok Kharat—alias 'Captain Kharat'—who styled himself as an astrologer and 'godman,' on serious charges. He is accused of administering intoxicants to a woman and subjecting her to prolonged sexual assault, as well as exploiting several other women.
The police have seized 58 objectionable videos and property documents worth ₹200 crore.
The accused is alleged to have gained the trust of a 35-year-old married woman by deceiving her with claims of religious rituals and divine powers; he then repeatedly sexually assaulted her—often after administering intoxicants—between November 2022 and December 2025.
During a police raid, a pen drive containing 58 obscene video clips was recovered from Kharat's office, 'Oaks Property Dealer.' It is suspected that several high-profile women and celebrities may be featured in these videos. The videos have been sent for forensic analysis. The investigation has also revealed that one of Kharat's former employees, Neeraj Jadhav, used to extort money from women by sending them objectionable photographs.
Engaged in Blackmail
Another sensational aspect of the case emerged when a complaint was filed against an employee of the accused's office in Shirdi, alleging extortion and threats to circulate obscene photographs. This development has raised suspicions that the entire operation may be part of a larger, organized racket.
Ashok Kharat, who previously served in the Merchant Navy, later gained prominence through his practice of astrology and numerology. Photographs depicting his associations with several prominent political leaders and influential figures have surfaced, making the case even more sensitive. Ashok Kharat is renowned for predicting the future of many prominent leaders. Many prominent leaders of the state visit him to seek insights into their future.
The police have also recovered substantial assets—including cash, weapons, and documents—from the accused's various hideouts. Preliminary investigations have revealed that, over the past 15 years, he has amassed assets worth approximately ₹200 crore.
Given the gravity of the matter, the Maharashtra government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute. The police have stated that further major revelations are likely to emerge in the coming days.
Summary
Kharat's immense wealth (estimated at around ₹200 crore) and photographs depicting him alongside prominent politicians have further intensified the controversy surrounding this case. To investigate this sensitive matter, the Maharashtra government has established an SIT under the leadership of female IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute.
