Stock Market Crash: Market Turmoil as US-Iran Tensions Escalate... Sensex Plummets 1,600 Points
Stock Market Crash: The rally witnessed in the stock market last week has come to a halt. On Monday, the Sensex and Nifty crashed immediately upon opening
Stock Market Crash: The conflict between the US and Iran shows no signs of abating. Following the failure of peace talks in Pakistan, a sudden and sharp surge in crude oil prices has once again dampened the sentiment in the stock markets. The upward momentum seen in the Indian stock market last week was abruptly halted, and the market crashed right at the opening on Monday.
The Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-share Sensex plunged by over 1,600 points immediately after opening, while the National Stock Exchange's Nifty index slipped by around 490 points. Meanwhile, shares across the board—ranging from IndiGo, Bajaj Finance, and Asian Paints to HDFC Bank—were seen collapsing.
Sensex and Nifty Crash Right at Opening
As trading commenced in the stock market, the BSE Sensex opened sharply lower at the 75,937 level—compared to its previous close of 77,550—and within just a few seconds, it tumbled further to hit 75,868. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty-50 also plummeted, opening at 23,589 against its previous close of 24,050.
Amidst this turmoil in the stock market, chaos appeared to reign supreme across the board. All 30 stocks included in the BSE's large-cap category were trading in the red zone. Speaking of the stocks that witnessed the sharpest declines, IndiGo (4%), Maruti (3%), Bajaj Finance (2.90%), SBI (2.80%), Reliance (2.70%), and HDFC Bank (2.60%) were trading with significant losses.
Negative Signals from Global Markets
The stock market had already been receiving negative signals from global markets, foreshadowing this decline. In fact, renewed tensions between the US and Iran—which had once again reached a critical peak—triggered turmoil across Asian stock markets. During early trading, Japan's Nikkei index was down by 600 points, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index had tumbled by nearly 400 points.
What Triggered the Stock Market Decline?
The primary catalyst behind the major stock market slump witnessed on Monday was the resurgence of war-related tensions between the US and Iran. Following the failure of diplomatic talks between the two nations in Pakistan, crude oil prices surged sharply. Meanwhile, a continuous exchange of warnings from both the US and Iran has persisted; this has dampened investor sentiment and led to the market crash.
