Top Taxpayers of 2023-24: Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has been named the highest-taxpaying sportsperson in India for the financial year 2023-24. According to a list by Fortune India, Kohli paid Rs. 66 crore in taxes, which is significantly higher than the costliest player in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mitchell Starc, whose price was Rs 4.75 crore.
Ranking Among Celebrities
Kohli is not just the top sportsperson but also ranks fifth among all celebrity taxpayers in India. The top four spots are occupied by:
- Shah Rukh Khan -Rs.92 crore
- Vijay -Rs.80 crore
- Salman Khan -Rs.75 crore
- Amitabh Bachchan -Rs.71 crore
Other Notable Sportspersons
Following Kohli, former cricket captain MS Dhoni is the next highest taxpayer in sports, payingRs.38 crore, which places him seventh on the overall list. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, continues to earn significantly through his IPL engagements with Chennai Super Kings. His participation in the next IPL season is still uncertain.

Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly
Sachin Tendulkar, another legendary cricketer, is the only other sportsperson in the top 10 highest taxpayers. Tendulkar paid Rs.28 crore in taxes for FY24. Sourav Ganguly, who has also served as BCCI president, is ranked 12th, paying Rs.23 crore.
Current Stars on the List
Current Indian cricket stars Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant also feature on the list. Pandya paid Rs. 13 crore, while Pant paid Rs.10 crore.
