Days earlier, at the G20 conference in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reprimanded his Canadian counterpart.

According to a Reuters story, the minister's spokesperson, Shanti Cosentino, said, "At this moment, we are putting off the upcoming trade mission to India."

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, went unnoticed by PM Modi, who attended official bilateral talks with many other foreign leaders during the G20 conference, and only allowed a quick, informal discussion on the sidelines five days ago.

Secessionism is being promoted in Canada

The country has been the scene of numerous rallies that have displeased India. Outside of their native state of Punjab in India, the Sikh population is largest in Canada. They are encouraging secessionism and promoting violence against Indian diplomats, destroying diplomatic facilities, and endangering the Indian population in Canada and their places of worship, the Indian government claimed following the leaders' meeting.

The notion of breaking away from the present country and founding independent nations is known as secessionism. To create a powerful left front, they urge the alliance of all left-leaning parties.

India announced on Friday that it has postponed trade negotiations with Canada. Earlier this month, Canada announced a similar delay, citing the need to "take stock," according to Reuters.

The two countries just stated their intention to sign an initial trade agreement this year roughly four months ago.

Unfavorable political events in Canada

India voiced its disapproval of a number of Canadian political moves. We have temporarily suspended negotiations till these political difficulties are resolved because India has expressed its displeasure with some political events in Canada, the official added.

The countries have already had more than six rounds of negotiations on the trade agreement. The Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) negotiations between the two nations were restarted in March 2022.

The free trade agreement (FTA) talks between India and Canada, which were restarted after a decade, have meantime ceased because of political concerns.

The official stated that talks will restart after the "political issues" have been settled without specifically mentioning the Khalistan issue, which caused friction between the two nations.
