Kashmir News: On Friday, officials reported that a body riddled with bullets was discovered in the Waduna area of Zainapora, located in the Shopian district of south Kashmir. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shopian confirmed that this incident is being treated as a terrorist attack. The deceased is believed to be a non-local man, and his body has been sent to a hospital for necessary legal procedures. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the victim.

Political Context

This unfortunate incident happened soon after Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the inaugural Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, signifying the reinstatement of an elected government after six years of President's rule. The recent assembly elections, held after a decade-long gap, were won by the NC-Congress alliance, with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) securing 42 seats and Congress winning six. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made significant gains with 29 seats, while the People's Democratic Party (PDP) managed to secure three seats. Additionally, the People's Conference, CPI(M), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won one seat each, with seven Independents also emerging victorious. These three-phase elections concluded on October 8.

New Leadership and Vision

Just a day after taking his oath, Omar Abdullah chaired his first cabinet meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar. He noted that he had previously served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009 to 2014. During the meeting, he emphasized that their administration's approach would be people-friendly and mentioned that they had entered the civil secretariat with a positive mindset, focused on delivering the best for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
