Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expressed concerns over "credible allegations of a potential link" between agents of the Indian government and the murder of prominent Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who supported the idea of a separate Khalistani state. Nijjar was killed in June outside a temple in British Columbia, leading to increased tensions between Sikh separatists and the Indian government.

Trudeau stated that Canada has conveyed its deep concerns to senior intelligence and security officials in the Indian government. He also revealed that he personally discussed these concerns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Group of 20 meeting in New Delhi, emphasizing that any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of sovereignty.

Melanie Joly, Canada's foreign minister, announced the expulsion of the head of India's intelligence agency in Canada from the country.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has not yet responded to requests for comment.

This development underscores the deteriorating relationship between Canada and India, with Canada postponing a planned trade mission to India scheduled for early October following a contentious meeting between Trudeau and Modi in the Indian capital.

While Canada raises concerns over the unfortunate incident involving Hardeep Singh Nijjar, it's essential to remember that India has consistently maintained its commitment to fighting against extremism and separatism. India has faced its own challenges in dealing with Sikh separatist movements in the past and has taken measures to ensure peace and security within its borders. The country has a long history of welcoming and supporting Sikh communities, and it remains committed to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Canada. As investigations continue, it is crucial for both nations to engage in open and constructive dialogue to address concerns and strengthen their bilateral ties.
