In a sudden and significant escalation of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, Hamas, a Palestinian group with support throughout the Palestinian territories, launched an unexpected attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. This development has triggered airstrikes by Israel in the Gaza Strip, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare a "state of war."

Hamas Origins and Ideology

Hamas, officially known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, was established in 1987 during the Palestinian Intifada (uprising). The group adheres to Islamist principles and receives support from Shiite Iran. It also aligns with the Muslim Brotherhood's ideology, which originated in Egypt in the 1920s.

Hamas in Gaza

Since 2007, Hamas has been the governing authority in the Gaza Strip. This period of control began after a brief civil conflict with the Fatah faction, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the West Bank and leads both the Fatah movement and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Election Victory and Conflict

Hamas assumed control of Gaza after winning the 2006 Palestinian parliamentary elections, which were the last elections held at that time. The transfer of power was marked by allegations from Hamas of a plot against them, while Abbas characterized the events as a coup.

Rejection of Israel's Existence

Hamas adamantly rejects recognizing the existence of the state of Israel and has been a vocal opponent of the Oslo peace agreements, brokered by Israel and the PLO in the mid-1990s.

The Armed Wing: Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades

Hamas operates an armed faction known as the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, which has dispatched both gunmen and suicide bombers into Israel. Hamas frames these actions as resistance against Israeli occupation. It is officially designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union, Canada, Egypt, and Japan.

Wide-ranging Support and Dispersed Leadership

Although Gaza is its primary stronghold, Hamas enjoys support across the Palestinian territories. The group's leadership figures are dispersed throughout various Middle Eastern nations, including Qatar.

Conclusion

Hamas's recent attack on Israel has intensified an already volatile conflict, with both sides engaged in military actions. The group's ideological stance and historical context play a significant role in the ongoing tensions in the region.
