Viral Video: Indian long-distance trains are equipped with different categories of coaches for passenger convenience. These include AC coaches, sleeper coaches, and general coaches, so that passengers of all classes can travel according to their needs and budget. However, in reality, the number of passengers becomes so high that there is hardly even room to stand in these coaches. General coaches, in particular, often become extremely crowded. In such situations, some passengers are forced to enter the luggage compartment, and videos of this kind are currently making the rounds.

Some people traveling in the luggage compartment

In the video, several passengers are seen sitting inside the luggage compartment. When asked why they came there, they replied that the other compartments were so crowded that there was no space to even stand. Their words clearly indicate that they took this step out of compulsion, not of choice. However, traveling in the luggage compartment is completely illegal.

What is shown in this video?

The railways design this compartment specifically for storing luggage, not for passengers to sit or stand. This compartment has neither proper seating nor any emergency facilities. This place is also extremely risky from a security perspective. In an emergency, the rescue resources for those present are almost nonexistent.

In the viral video, a Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel can be seen advising passengers to vacate the luggage compartment immediately. He repeatedly tells them that sitting here is against the rules and that if caught, they could face a heavy fine.

Passengers cite their compulsions, but the rules remain in place. Safety is paramount in the eyes of the railway administration. If an accident results in harm to passengers in the luggage compartment, it can be difficult to determine responsibility. This is why entering such a compartment is considered a punishable offense.
