In March 2023 India had summoned the Canadian High Commissioner due to the protests being carried out by Khalistan supporters outside Indian embassies At the same time, large-scale action was being taken against Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh in Punjab.

Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead

Meanwhile Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead by some masked gunmen in the parking area of ​​a gurdwara in the Canadian state of British Columbia on June 18, 2023.

Though a few weeks after Nijjar's murder, a Khalistani organization released posters blaming Indian High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma and Consul General Apoorva Srivastava for the murder. These pamphlets blaming the two diplomats for the murder also announced a rally in Toronto on July 8.

Due to this, India had also raised the issue with Canadian officials. At that time, Canada had assured the safety of Indian diplomats and termed the 'propaganda pamphlets' issued as 'unacceptable'.

 The External Affairs Ministry had said in a statement that "The Canadian government is expected to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our diplomats.

He further said, "I think there is a hidden reason why separatists, extremists, people who advocate violence are given space, and I think this is not good for relations and for Canada as well..."

Pro-Khalistan forces on Canadian soil

 During the G20 summit held in New Delhi, India had given clear indications that it was dissatisfied with Canada's response to the activities of pro-Khalistan forces on Canadian soil.The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had informed Justin Trudeau about India's concerns about the 'continued anti-India activities of extremists in Canada'.

Then in September 2023, Canada accused India of being involved in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist and expelled New Delhi's intelligence chief in retaliation.

This diplomatic move by Canada soured relations between Ottawa and Delhi even more than before. Even though Justin Trudeau said that in June, Khalistani terrorists in British Columbia were killed by a Khalistani terrorist.

Indian government rejected the allegations

There were "credible allegations" of Indian agents' involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Our government is actively investigating these allegations. Justin Trudeau asked the Indian government to cooperate in resolving the matter.

Canada suspended visa services

Canada called India a 'foreign threat'

In January 2024, Canada has once again made serious allegations against India. Canada called India a 'foreign threat' and also said that it could potentially interfere in their elections. This allegation was made by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

India had rejected the allegation of interference in Canada's election. India said that Canada itself is "interfering in our internal affairs".

Summoned the Canadian ambassador

The  External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that further deterioration in relations between the two countries would cause great harm to Canada. Freedom of expression cannot be the freedom to advocate violence.

A group of Khalistanis has been misusing Canada's freedom laws for years. But the Canadian government is not taking any action against them due to vote bank.

Meanwhile latest controversy started when India received a "diplomatic communication from Canada yesterday, which said that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats are "persons under surveillance" in that country.
