Women Doctors Leave Kolkata Hospital: Several women doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have left the campus due to fear following the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor on August 9. A nurse from the hospital expressed concern, stating, “Even after such frightening incidents, we are working night shifts and sometimes find ourselves alone in a ward. We feel unsafe now".
Vandalism and Protest
On the night of August 14, a mob entered the RG Kar Hospital campus where protests were taking place over the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The group caused extensive damage, including to the demonstration site, vehicles, and public property. They also vandalized the hospital's emergency department, nursing unit, and medicine store, and damaged CCTV cameras.
Following these events, many women doctors chose to leave the campus for their safety.
Current Situation of Doctors
Senior advocate Aparajita Singh said that out of nearly 700 resident doctors at the hospital, only about 30-40 women doctors and 60-70 men doctors are still on campus after the damage.
Details of the Crime
The body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was discovered in a semi-naked state in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Police reports suggest the crime occurred between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.
The autopsy revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered to death. Sanjoy Roy, the arrested suspect, is accused of severely assaulting the doctor and then killing her by strangling and smothering her.
Widespread Outrage and Investigation
The brutal incident has sparked nationwide outrage and protests within the medical community and beyond.

In related developments, the CBI has received court approval to conduct polygraph tests on the former principal and four doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. These individuals had reportedly dined with the victim before she was found dead.
