Bangladesh Election Result: BNP Performs Strongly in Bangladesh Elections, Tarique Rahman Set to Become PM
The BNP had already announced that if it comes to power, Rahman will be the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh, ending the 18-month rule of the interim government led by Yunus.
Bangladesh Election Result: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has further strengthened its lead over its former ally, Jamaat-e-Islami. Counting of votes continued late Thursday night for the crucial general elections to replace the interim government that took power after the collapse of the Awami League government in August 2024. The BNP, the party of the late Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, appears poised to form a government in the country after nearly 20 years.
According to Reuters, the BNP has secured a majority in the Bangladesh election results. The BNP+ won 211 seats. However, fundamentalist parties did not receive the expected support. In the absence of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's now-disbanded Awami League, the election was a direct contest between the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Rahman to be Bangladesh's next Prime Minister!
The BNP had already announced that if it came to power, Rahman would be Bangladesh's next Prime Minister, ending the 18-month rule of the Yunus-led interim government. Jamaat-e-Islami President Shafiqur Rahman was unofficially declared the winner in a Dhaka constituency. He received 82,645 votes, while his BNP rival received 61,920.
Opposition to Bangladesh's Independence
Jamaat-e-Islami, which opposed Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971, is hoping to form the first Islamist-led government in constitutionally secular Bangladesh under the leadership of its 67-year-old chief, Shafiqur Rahman. The Election Commission had made extensive security arrangements for the elections, deploying nearly 1 million security personnel—the largest number ever in the country's electoral history.
