CBSE to Introduce Two-Tier Science and Social Science for Class 9th-10th in 2026 Session

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is implementing major changes to school education, implementing the rule of conducting two board exams in the 10th grade. Starting in 2026, CBSE 10th board students will be able to appear for the board exam twice. The first board exam is mandatory. In an effort to expedite the release of results for students, 12th grade answer sheets are being checked on digital screens. Meanwhile, the CBSE is preparing to provide significant relief to 9th and 10th grade students by implementing a dual curriculum for social science and science students, similar to the 10th grade math curriculum.

Currently, two types of math curriculum

CBSE-affiliated schools currently implement two types of math curriculum for students in grades 9 and 10. One curriculum is called Basic Math, while the other is called Standard Math. After passing grade 8, students can choose one of the math curriculums. Students study the chosen math curriculum for two years and take the 10th board exam in this math curriculum.

Now, two types of science and social science curriculums

The CBSE is expanding the two-type math curriculum format currently in place for 9th and 10th grade students in schools, and is now preparing to implement two different curriculums for science and social science as well. This effort is aimed at easing the path for students in science and social science. Under the new system, after 8th grade, just like math, students will have to choose between a basic and standard curriculum in science and social science. After that, students will be able to study that curriculum in 9th and 10th grades.

Implemented from 2026, board exams in 2028

CBSE's decision to implement two different curricula in science and social science for 9th and 10th grade students will be implemented from the 2026-27 session. This means that after passing 8th grade, students moving to 9th grade will have to choose between a basic and standard curriculum in science and social science, just like math. After that, in 2028, such students will be able to take two different 10th grade board exams in science and social science.
