Meet the Real ‘JP Singh’ Who Inspired John Abraham’s Role in The Diplomat

John Abraham’s The Diplomat, now streaming on Netflix, is inspired by the true story of an Indian diplomat who helped rescue an Indian woman from Pakistan. The character he plays is based on Jitender Pal Singh, a senior IFS officer known as 'JP Singh'. Who is JP Singh?

Jitender Pal Singh is a 2002-batch Indian Foreign Service officer. In 2025, he was appointed as India's Ambassador to Israel. His appointment came at a time when the Middle East was facing many challenges, making his role very important.

Talks with the Taliban

In November 2024, Singh met Taliban’s acting defence minister, Mullah Yaqoob, to talk about strengthening India-Afghanistan ties. This helped open doors for more talks, including Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s meeting with Taliban’s foreign minister in Dubai in December 2024.
