Mithun Chakraborty to get Dadasaheb Phalke Award for outstanding contribution to cinema

Legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty, a veteran of the Hindi film industry, will be honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on social media platform X. Mithun will receive the award during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Indian cinema. Mithun Chakraborty's Cinematic Journey

Awarded for his first film

Mithun Chakraborty has had an illustrious career spanning 48 years, during which he has acted in over 350 films across various languages, including Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia, and Bhojpuri. He first gained recognition with his debut film Mrigaya (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen, which earned him his first National Film Award. His versatility as an actor led him to dominate the 1980s and 90s, particularly for his action-packed and dance-centric films.

Widespread fame from 'Disco Dancer'

Mithun's breakthrough on a national level came with the superhit film Disco Dancer (1982), which made him a household name. His performances in films like Suraksha (1979), Varadat (1981), Pyaar Jhukta Nahin (1985), Agneepath (1990), Gunda (1998), and most recently The Tashkent Files (2019) were also highly praised.

Three-Time National Award Winner

Mithun has won the National Film Award three times in his career. After receiving his first award for Mrigaya (1976), he was awarded his second National Award for his stellar performance in Tahader Katha (1993). His third National Award came in 1996 for his portrayal of Swami Vivekananda in the film Swami Vivekananda.

Padma Bhushan Honoree

In addition to his film accolades, Mithun Chakraborty was honored with the Padma Bhushan Award in April 2024, further solidifying his legacy in Indian cinema. Alongside his film career, he has also made his mark in television and politics, making him a multifaceted figure in Indian entertainment and public life.
