Mumbai Metro Lines 2B and 9 to begin partial operations from April 3, improving connectivity across eastern and northern suburbs.

Mumbai: Portions of Mumbai Metro Line 2B and Mumbai Metro Line 9 will begin partial operations from April 3, officials said, marking a key step in expanding the city’s metro network.

The move by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is expected to ease daily commuting across eastern and northern parts of Mumbai.

In the initial phase, Line 2B will operate between DN Nagar and Mandale (Mankhurd), covering five stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL Metro, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. The corridor will improve connectivity between Andheri West, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Kurla, Chembur, and the eastern suburbs.

Line 9 will begin services on a 4.5 km stretch between Dahisar and Mira Road, with stations at Dahisar, Pandurang Wadi, Mira Gaon, and Kashigaon. The line is expected to serve key northern commuter zones, particularly the Mira-Bhayandar region.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, is scheduled to preside over the inauguration ceremony.

The project had faced delays since late 2025 due to code of conduct restrictions, budget sessions, and safety clearance requirements.

Officials said the initial stretch of Line 2B, part of the larger Yellow Line corridor, will open after completion of safety approvals and trial runs. The full corridor, once completed, will span 23.6 km with 20 stations.

Similarly, Phase I of Line 9 is expected to enhance connectivity in the western suburbs and offer improved transit options for residents in the Mira-Bhayandar belt.

Senior MMRDA officials conducted final inspections this week, reviewing station readiness, signalling systems, and passenger facilities ahead of the launch.

Transport planners said the new services are likely to reduce travel time for commuters who rely on suburban trains and congested road networks.

The corridors are also expected to ease traffic on key routes such as the Eastern Express Highway and SV Road, which face heavy congestion during peak hours.

Line 9 is expected to reduce traffic between Dahisar check naka and Bhayandar, a stretch known for frequent bottlenecks.

The April 3 rollout coincides with other mobility initiatives, including tunnelling work for the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project and the launch of a pod taxi project in Bandra-Kurla Complex, indicating a broader push for integrated urban transport.
