The accident occurred when a tire of the bus burst, causing the driver to lose control and the bus collided with a truck. This information was given by fire department officials, who reached the spot and carried out a rescue operation. Initial reports put the death toll at 22. 13 others were seriously injured in the accident and were admitted to hospitals near the city of Teofilo Otoni. Local officials said that the bus was carrying 45 passengers which had left from Sao Paulo, but its tire burst on the way and then collided with the truck. After this, a car also collided with the bus, in which it is said that three passengers were travelling, who survived. The accident happened at 4 am.
